Stop your dog eating your cat’s food
18th December 2019
When cats and dogs live together in one household, it can be difficult to separate them at meal times.
Many cats like to graze, enjoying around a dozen small meals throughout the day. Dogs however, will often eat food as soon as it’s served and sometimes move onto the cat’s dinner once they’ve finished their own.
This can be a costly exercise, but more worryingly, it can have lasting health implications for your dog and cat. If your dog keeps eating your cat’s food, they could become overweight. Obesity can lead to illnesses such as diabetes or heart disease, and if your cat doesn’t get enough food, they might be tempted to search for food elsewhere, encouraging them to roam further from home.
Prescription diets
For cats on prescription diets, giving them exclusive access to their food is even more pressing to ensure their condition is managed properly. Some prescription diets work only when the food is consumed correctly and at the right level. If your dog eats the prescription cat food, then this won’t happen.
Feeding solution
Whilst placing your pets’ food bowls in different rooms might be a quick solution, it can be a difficult process to manage, especially when you are away from home. If you don’t have time to monitor your pets’ feeding habits throughout the day, a better solution would be to serve your cat’s food in a SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder.
The SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder has a lid that only opens for your cat. It works by recognising your cat’s existing microchip or SureFlap RFID collar tag, opening when they approach and closing once they have finished eating. This means that you can put their cat food down in the morning and it will remain secure throughout the day, preventing your dog from accessing it. The sealed bowl keeps food fresher, making it more palatable for your cat by keeping wet food moist and stopping dry food going stale.
Making mealtimes easier
By using SureFeed, both your cat and your dog can lead healthier lifestyles. You may even find you save money on pet food, and meal times will be less stressful. You will no longer need to act as peacekeeper and monitor their feeding habits!
