Keeping your pet hydrated in line with World Kidney Day
8th March 2018
World Kidney Day is on the 8th March, a day highlighting the importance of caring for our kidneys. Drinking plenty of water is one of the ways to keep our kidneys healthy, and the same goes for our pets.
Some pets can be fussy about where or how they drink, so we’ve put together some top tips to help you find ways to keep them hydrated.
Water bowl types
Having the right water bowl for your pet can make them feel more comfortable when they’re drinking. Your pet might prefer a certain material such as metal or ceramic. Try a few different pet bowls to find the one that your pet likes best. Heavy bowls are ideal for big dogs so that they don’t knock them over. Or they may prefer a bowl in a stand so that they don’t have to bend over to drink.
Fresh water
Replace your pet’s water regularly so that they always have access to fresh, clean water. Some cats and even dogs prefer a running water source where they can access a continuous stream of fresh water. Pet drinking fountains are available, or a dripping tap can work just as well.
Wet pet food
Pets can get a lot of water from their food so serving them wet pet food rather than dry pet food can increase their water intake. If you decide to change your pet’s food, start giving them the new food gradually rather than switching straight from one to the other.
Keep water separate
If their water is placed close to their food or toileting area, cats may be less inclined to drink for fear of contamination. Therefore, keeping their water bowl in a separate location to their food bowl and litter tray may encourage them to drink more.
Outdoor water sources
If your pet spends a lot of time in the garden, consider putting a water bowl outside for them. Place it in a sheltered position to keep it free of leaves and dirt. Don’t forget to replace the water regularly to keep it fresh.
Long walks and journeys
When you go out with your dog, whether on a long walk or car journey, take some water and a water bowl to keep them hydrated on the go. Don’t rely on there being suitable water sources along the way. Collapsible water bowls are ideal space savers.
