Pet Microchipping
10th January 2018
Microchipping is one of the best forms of pet identification for your cat or dog. A microchip will stay with your pet for its lifetime, unlike a collar and tag that could become lost.
All veterinary practices and some pet shops offer pet microchipping. A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice. It is inserted under the skin of your pet using a syringe.
Once the microchip is in place, your pet’s microchip number is then stored on a database, along with your address details. The microchip can then be read with a hand held scanner at a veterinary practice or animal shelter and your details accessed via the database.
Will my pet need to have an anaesthetic?
Microchipping is a quick, non-invasive procedure that does not require your pet to be anaesthetised. Take a look at our video of a cat being microchipped.
Is pet microchipping compulsory?
By April 2016, it will be a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped. There are currently no plans to make cat microchipping compulsory, though it is advisable as many cats are free roaming. Even indoor cats should be microchipped in case they escape outside.
Is microchipping expensive?
Prices vary, but microchipping your pet can cost as little as £10. June is National Microchipping Month, when many veterinary practices drop their prices. Some pet shops will even offer microchipping services at reasonable rates during National Microchipping Month.
Will my pet’s existing microchip work with Sure Petcare products?
Sure Petcare products work with your pet’s existing microchip and they are compatible with all common microchip types. So if your pet is already microchipped, they can start using a Sure Petcare product right away.
Do I need to know my pet’s microchip number to program it into a Sure Petcare product?
We’ve made the process of storing your pet’s microchip into one of our products very simple. A Sure Petcare product will detect and read your pet’s microchip and store the number in memory. You do not need to have your pet’s microchip number to hand to complete this process.
