How to care for your black cat
23rd October 2019
Black cats can make wonderful pets but due to their bad reputation and dark coats they might need a bit of extra attention compared to other cats. Here we take a look at how you can offer the best care to your black cat.
Visibility
At night, it can be very difficult for cars to spot your black cat if they are out and about in the dark. If your cat wears a collar, consider giving them a reflective collar so that they can be spotted more easily when they decide to cross the road. Make sure the collar is the breakaway variety so that if it snags on anything, your cat won’t hurt themselves.
Keep your cat indoors
If you’re worried about your black cat wandering the streets at night, you could consider keeping them indoors after dark. Our Microchip Pet Door, Microchip Cat Flap Connect and Microchip Pet Door Connect feature a curfew mode so that you can set the door to automatically lock and unlock at times specified by you. Our connected doors also tell you when your cat enters and leaves the house to help you stay connected with their movements to give you peace of mind.
Keep your cat indoors on Halloween and when firework displays are due to take place in your area. Ill-meaning people can and do pick on black cats at this time of year so it’s a good idea to keep your cat indoors out of harm’s way.
Adopting a black cat
Due to superstitions, many black cats take longer to be adopted from cat shelters than cats with other fur colours. If you are thinking of adopting a cat, don’t overlook cats with black fur. Take all the cats into consideration and choose a pet based on their personality and how well they will fit into your family life rather than based on the colour of their coat.
