How to keep cat food fresh and make it more appealing to your cat

Find it hard to keep your cat’s food fresh? Take a look at our top tips to ensure your cat’s wet or dry food is kept in tip top condition!

Storing dry cat food

It can be tempting to purchase large bags of dry cat food but as soon as the bag is opened, the food will start to degrade. Small bags may be more expensive, but the food is less likely to go stale before you use it all up. Close the food bag securely after each use. If you want to store the food in a plastic container, keep the food inside the bag and then place the bag into the container, as food transferred directly to the container might take on the odour of the plastic. Store the food in a cool, dry place.

Storing wet cat food

If you open a can of wet cat food and you only use half, keep the other half in the fridge and cover it securely. Specially designed can lids will keep them well sealed, but cling film works well too. Many cats aren’t keen on eating cold cat food though, so it might be better to serve individual pouches that have been stored at room temperature.

Check the use by date

We all like to check when human food goes out of date. Get into the habit of checking the use by date on your cat’s food too. This is especially important if you purchase cat food from a small independent pet shop that might not get through their pet food very quickly.

Serving cat food

Before putting food down, discard any remaining, stale food that has been left in the bowl. Wash and dry the bowl before refilling.

Keeping cat food fresh after it’s served

It’s easier to leave dry cat food in a dish throughout the day but wet food can quickly dry out and become unpalatable to your pet. Whilst trying to keep wet food cool might keep is fresher, many cats will turn their nose up at cold food, preferring their food to be served at room temperature. To keep wet, and dry, food fresher after it’s been served, you could invest in a SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder. The feeder contains a sealed bowl that will keep the food fresher for longer and prevents flies settling on the food. It has the added benefit of keeping the food separate from other pets and preventing certain pets overeating.
